Writer's Challenge

July - December 2010

Calling all writers! This is the first of two challenges for the 2010-2011 school year beginning July 1, 2010. A winner will be chosen from each of the three age group categories listed below by January 1, 2011. The group categories are:

  7 to 9 year olds

  10 to 12 year olds

  13 to 15 year olds

The three winners will receive a "writer's T-shirt" for each of their home room classmates and an autographed Aerial book of their choice.

The WRITER'S CHALLENGE for July 2010 through December 2010 must follow the criteria listed below:

Read the French folktale "Stone Soup" by Marcia Brown (Aladdin Picture Books). It is a story of 3 soldiers returning home from the Napoleonic Wars.

Change the 3 French soldiers to 3 American soldiers in Iraq: the first is a mechanical engineer, the second is a farmer, and the third is a dentist fighting in the war.

Research Arab cuisine, Badarash, the three job descriptions of the soldiers, and maybe a soldier interview.

The story premise is "three American soldiers become separated from their scouting party after a scuffle. They come upon the outer village of Badarash tired and hungry. What is it that they do for the community to secure food and shelter for themselves?! How do they find their way back to their base camp?

All manuscript entries must be mailed (post marked) by Saturday, October 29, to be considered for the WRITER'S CHALLENGE. November and December will be used to evaluate all of the entries. REMEMBER ALL WORKS MUST BE ORIGINAL. Send your entry to Ronan Enterprises, Inc.; P.O. Box 574; Richmond, MI 48062. If you would like your manuscript returned to you, enclose a stamped return addressed manila envelope with your manuscript.

Enjoy the challenge. I can't wait to receive your work!

With warm regards,
